From addressing misinformation on social media to providing instant updates on road projects, weather alerts, and township events, White Lake Township turned to GOGov’s Citizen Notifications and municipality branded mobile app, MI White Lake. Discover how this all-in-one communication solution is helping White Lake Township connect with residents like never before while preparing for the future.

About White Lake Township

White Lake Township, known as the "Four-Season Playground," spans 37.2 square miles of scenic lakes, parks, and a mix of residential and commercial properties. With a significant portion of the population aged 55 and older, the community thrives on its welcoming atmosphere, natural beauty, and year-round outdoor activities, including horseback riding, hiking, golf courses, and expansive parks. This year marks an exciting milestone as White Lake Township embarks on the construction of a transformative Civic Center project. This development will feature new Township Offices, a state-of-the-art Police and Fire Station, park space, and retail areas, bringing fresh opportunities and enhanced services to our residents.

What was the challenge that led White Lake Township to GOGov?

White Lake Township sought new ways to connect with residents while keeping in mind the diverse generations that make up the community.

"We recognize that people are constantly on their phones, no matter where they are. It just made sense to engage with our community through that technology and embrace the tools available to us." – Kelly Lang, Supervisors Secretary

Another challenge the township faced was the spread of misinformation through unofficial Facebook community groups. Since these groups were not managed by the township, inaccurate information often circulated, making it harder to ensure residents received reliable updates.

To address these challenges, White Lake Township adopted GOGov’s Citizen Notifications, featuring a township-branded mobile app. This platform allows residents to access accurate information and real-time updates anytime, anywhere—enhancing communication and engagement throughout the community.

How is White Lake Township Using GOGov?

White Lake Township is still new to GOGov but has already been using it to keep residents informed with important updates. From notifying the community about a new garbage company to winter snowstorms, office hours, holidays, and local events, the platform has become a valuable communication tool.

The township’s mobile app, MI White Lake, features a suite of applets with quick links to essential resources, including the calendar of events and meetings, code of ordinances, election information, employment opportunities, and more. Having all township information in one place makes it easy for residents to access what they need, anytime, anywhere.

Recently, the app proved especially useful in keeping the community informed. It helped spread the word about a completed road construction project, letting residents know they no longer needed to take a lengthy detour. Additionally, during extreme weather, the township used the app to quickly notify residents about available warming centers—demonstrating its effectiveness in delivering timely, critical information.

Future Plans for White Lake

Looking ahead, White Lake Township plans to send out weekly or biweekly updates on the progress of the new Civic Center, keeping residents informed every step of the way. They also hope to support local businesses by featuring a “Small Business of the Week,” sending notifications that encourage the community to visit and shop locally. In addition, the township will continue sharing general updates to ensure residents stay connected and informed.

Advice for other Municipalities considering GOGov

Cathy Derocher, HR Manager from White Lake emphasized the importance of involving all department heads to ensure a consistent flow of information is shared through the app. By keeping communication open and encouraging multiple sources to contribute, the township can provide residents with timely and relevant updates.

"Everyone on your team was cheerful, enthusiastic, and helpful. We are also pleased that GOGov continues to offer suggestions on how the Township can maximize the app’s potential." – Kelly Lang, Supervisors Secretary
